History & Significance
The ancient mythology and cosmic significance of the Nashik Kumbh Mela.
The Origin (Amrit Manthan)
According to Hindu mythology, during the churning of the cosmic ocean (Samudra Manthan), a pot (Kumbh) of nectar (Amrit) was produced. During a 12-day celestial battle for the pot between gods and demons, drops of nectar fell at four places: Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik.
The Simhastha Period
The Nashik Kumbh is specifically called Simhastha because it is celebrated when Jupiter (Brihaspati) enters the zodiac sign of Leo (Simha) and the Sun is in Leo.
